May 11 - Desolation Trail (Millcreek Canyon)

After a week of rain, time to get out for an after work hike. Heading for the Desolation Trail to the SLC Overlook. A little over 4 miles is perfect.

I get to the trailhead around 4:20pm and head off. Around the trail head, Solomon's Seal are starting to bloom.

Further along, the Glacier Lilies are done blooming; just leaves and a seed pods. But Waterleaf and the OregonGrape are still blooming strong.

Everything is sure greening up. The baby Oaks leaves are out -- so tiny right now. All the other trees and shrubs are greening up. Some trees like the Wild Cherry are already blooming

Today is all about the flowers (woodland and otherwise) as they are really starting to bloom....

I'm seeing Heartleafed Arnica

Sweetpea or Sweet vetch.

(Looked very pretty along with the Yellow Balsamroot.)

The Side-flowered Mitrewort are blooming!! They're teeny tiny fringed white flower on a long stalk. Very dainty plant.

A different type of Solomon's Seal further up the trail is about ready to blooming. I see it all the way to the top.

Fairy-Bells

Forget-me-not

A very camouflaged Leopard Lily. The brown and purple flower (with yellow spots) is very hard to see especially when there's a single plant. My favorite of the day!

Woodland Star

I'm almost to the top and the Glacier Lilies are still blooming with Spring Beautys.

I also see WesternVirgin's Bowers vine

At the top, the view of the city is nice but it's in the glare of the setting sun.

The oaks up here are not leafing out yet - not surprising though.

To the south, much less snow on Mt Olympus. Maybe next time, I'll continue up the trail further just to see what's there.

Now it's time to head back down.

Well, I missed the Utah Milkvetch

And the mass of Penstemon (one of many species around here) hidden around a tree.

Definitely blossoming into late Spring! Lovely hike!
